We cannot love God without also loving our brother – 1 John 4:20 – 5:3

This is the last place in 1 John that specifically mentions love.  There are some themes repeated and emphasized here about the nature of this love in action.

Before I proceed, I would like to pause while you read the whole letter of 1 John again.  It takes less than 15 minutes.  I will wait while you read.

Now, let’s take a look at this passage at the end of chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5.

The Consequences of a Love Perfected – 1 John 4:17-19

This is a passage that I have read many times, but as I take more time now to meditate about it and work to understand what it is saying, I discover more about how different and amazing this love is.

These are the verses:

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us.  1 John 4:17-19 (NKJV)

Love in Action in the New Testament – 1 John – part 3

As I mentioned in the last post, there is one other place in 1 John 2 that talks about love.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”  1 John 2:15-17

Love in Action in the New Testament – 1 John – part 1

Introduction

In previous posts I have talked about the importance that the Lord places on love.  He cites Love as the basis for the Law and Prophets in Matthew 22:37-40, for example.  The last several posts looked at 1 Corinthians 13.  This chapter is a comprehensive definition of the love that is the taught about and demonstrated, both positively and negatively, throughout the bible.

What I want to do now is to survey the New Testament to look at examples of this love in action and learn from them what the Lord has designed for us.  I am starting with 1 John since I know there is a lot here about love and how critical it is for us.

Each of us has patterns in the choices that we make in our lives.  These patterns and choices come from the priorities we have.  We may not give this much thought, but those personal priorities are there for each of us, providing a structure to the lives that we live.

It is not unusual to hear someone claim to love God.  I make that claim myself.  But what does that mean?  Or rather, what is that supposed to mean, as we see it described in God’s word?  In the last post, I talked about how our whole existence is supposed to be involved in our love for God.  What does that mean to me?  How will that show up in my life?  This is not to be merely a one time event, but an ongoing relationship.  Notice the sense of continuity in this passage in Jude.

In the last couple of posts I have talked about the love of God and how we can understand that love by who He is and what He does.  I am sure we will return to that topic since it is that same kind of love that He desires of us.

In considering what it is to love the Lord, let’s start with a scripture that gets us to the essence of the expectations that God has for His people.  I mentioned in an earlier post that Jesus was once asked what was the greatest commandment.
